On the plane ride to Kunming, they were showing this movie, Naam Yi Boon Sik. I did not get the name during the flight but I got really into it and then *bam* we had to land and they just turned off the movie right in the middle of it! GAH! Don't you hate that? Our flight was not supposed to be that long but I guess, planes are always late in China. Also, they did not bother to change the sign above the gate when we were boarding and 1/2 of us were just standing there wondering if the plane boarding was our flight. What I learned that day is to never doubt Nat Damon from JTD. He knows.

Anyway, now I have to try to find the movie in LA, probably in San Gabriel, or maybe one can Netflix it? I don't know. But I need to finish it. Maybe I can have a "invisible target" lumpia wrapping party even though those 2 things do not even go together...but seriously, i need a serious break from Chinese food. I love it and I love dumplings but I think I need about 6 months before I go out for Chinese food...even American Chinese food.

This is the longest trailer in the world - over 10 minutes. But I saw this trailer before the screening of "Planet B-Boy" and I have been waiting for it ever since. I think I need to jump in the ocean. Life is super hectic, we are packing up the library before summer hits and there are all sorts of things going on with that which I cannot even get into because it's too overwhelming! At least I have this movie to look forward to and also watching that "Made of Honor" movie with Ambookgeek. We like that stuff so I don't want to hear it. Can you imagine just living life on the road and just going all over continents to surf and be with the people you care about? Pretty crazy...but maybe not.

I watched "Girls Rock!" last night at the Nuart in Santa Monica. A bit of a trek for me but worth it. I read a couple of reviews before heading out and I thought it was interesting that out of the group of critics I read, all the men gave it a "C" and the women gave it a "B."  I never really read reviews but I thought I would check it out. 

 

I learned about the Rock Camp for Girls back when I was in college because I listened to bands like Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill and a lot of groups categorized as "riot grrl."  I remembered thinking (1)wow! I wish I wasn't too old to go to Rock Camp and (2)how f---ing cool is that!!!

 

For what this documentary is and probably with the budget they had, I thought it was great.  I would definitely recommend that people go and see it.  The directors follow 4 girls, each a different age, from different backgrounds and different degrees of musical experience and shows what  they experienced at the camp.  All the camp staff are women who pretty much rock, like Carrie Brownstein, who I love.  She's amazing and what she and the other staffers (Beth Ditto being one of them) just shows these girls that they can be proud of who they are and that there is more to life than being skinny or acting like Britney Spears. 

 

The camp is only 1 week but so much happens that cannot be shown or captured for the screen.  The girls learn how to communicate and express themselves.  Honestly, I wish I had that when I was a kid. 

 

It's funny, heart-warming, thoughtful, provoking and of course, rockin! 

 

I think, if you have a kid who just never felt they could fit in, you should definitely take them to see this. They are real girls with real issues.  There is certainly not enough time to get too in depth in these girls lives but what little you do see is worth watching.
