Just curious because I think I had one of those weeks were I just agreed to help EVERYONE! It's ok. I agreed and I can do it but also it is more proof that I'm kind of crazy!
I haven't had 2 days off in a row since the beginning of the school year and it was wonderful. I wish I did not need 2 jobs but I do but 2 days off was pretty amazing. I do have homework and to prepare for tomorrow's lesson but I really did enjoy myself. (Oh crap! Just remembered I need to do grades tomorrow morning! Luckily I finished all but one before semester break :))
I spent yesterday morning walking around Chinatown because it was new year's day. Happy Year of the Ox!
We call it lechon in the Philippines and it is delicious. I'm sure some people would freak out about it but it's food from my culture and I embrace it.
I also tried a restaurant called Kim Chuy which was in a little mini shopping center (there are a ton in Chinatown) and ended up having fried fish and rice. There is something about fried fish that is just comforting and I hardly eat it so it was time.
I even had time to make champuraddo. Have you had it? It's Filipino chocolate rice.
You cook it like regular rice but with extra water so it's like porridge and also add a tea/tablespoon of sugar and a tablespoon of cooking chocolate. I used bittersweet ghiradelli because I have it lying around from holiday cookie baking. I also threw in a dash of cinnamon. It's not very sweet but you eat it with milk or a little condensed milk. I have a crazy sweet tooth and I grew up eating it with condensed milk. It is perfect on a cold day because it is hot and steamy (ha ha ha - remembering a twitter interaction).
2 days off you can actually accomplish things like cleaning your little studio and laundry. Is it just me but is doing laundry at the laundromat complete torture? I swear, the owner has the worst station on the planet on. Let me just say it's like being locking in a room for 2 hours listening to Celine Dion. TORTURE! By the end of it, I'm staring at the clocking running down on the dryer so I can grab my clothes and throw them in the bag. I can't even stay there to fold because if you were stuck listening to Celine Dion for 2 hours you would want to stab your ears like me!
I also got to feed my new obsession with the Fleet Foxes album. It's really beautiful. I am sad I missed them on SNL.
and also digitize more CDs. I didn't have any Hepcat on my iTunes. I am not sure how that happened so I remedied it today.
So here are 2 songs to enjoy this evening.
I have not had much time to digitize more of my records but the last group was pretty good.
I thought I'd throw in an Etta James' track because of this. Just kidding! I love Etta James. Who does not love her version of "At Last"? This one is off of Argo Records and the A side is "Two Sides (to Every Story)." I have always loved Etta James voice - she's got a pretty mean growl on her other songs.
Sticking with the 70s, this is Al Green's "You Say It" from London Records (1970). It's funky! This one makes you want to get up and dance.
That's it for tonight.
Have a great Sunday night and a great week!
I thought it was going to be a whole lot to set-up than it turned out to be. The turntable was easy to put together just follow the directions. The difficult part that I still keep adjusting is the counter-balance weight at the end of the needle arm. I forgot that you need to adjust it with each album. It all depends on the quality of the pressing and how old it is and I am sure other factors that I am not technically schooled in. I am pretty comfortable with turntables, I own 3 of various styles but I was constantly being reminded of things I never really worried about as a radio DJ because someone before me had always worried about it.
After setting up the turntable, I inserted the EZ Vinyl Converter & Audacity disc that comes with the turntable. First, I have a MAC, the EZ Vinyl Converter is not MAC compatible. Second, after going back and forth and a little frustration, the Audacity software on the disc is outdated. Luckily, I have used Audacity at school with my students and it is Open Source and very easy to use. I ended up downloading Audacity from the website. I also ended up having to find a post about what to change the settings on my little iBook G4 so that I could record. Thank you flyingsnail! I had to change my Audio inputs and MIDI setting and I have never done that before.
At first, because I did not know I had to change all the inputs and audio settings, I would monitor the input in Audacity, it was picking up some weird feedback but it was also kind of picking up the record. After I downloaded the new Audacity and changed the audio settings, it started working and I was getting playback from my computer. It was definitely one of the coolest things I have ever done!
ADDENDUM: Oh yeah, you also need to down load the mp3 encoder = LAME LIB. I know the .aiff (MAC) and .wav (PC) are better formats but if you want to be able to play them pretty much where ever I would use the .mp3 format which still seems more universal than the other audio formats. (if I am wrong please correct me. thanks!)
So, with that little review, here are a couple of the 45s I've converted for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!
Lovefool by the Cardigans is the first single I converted from a limited edition white 45. Whoo-hoooo!
Happy 4th of July! Or Happy Friday! which every applies to you and yours. I am being completely lazy today though I might take a walk to get some ice cream because it's perfect ice cream weather.
Have you heard this song "Black & Gold" by Sam Sparro. I have been loving this song and had no idea who it was until the dear Miss Felicious helped me out :) HURRAY! Now I can dance it out in my studio. Love it!
Enjoy! (check out the whole album too! it's great!)
I also ended up in Tarzana with the Reolas to watch their friend play in his side project band, The Blue Band. Ok, one guy is from Supertramp and another guy used to play with Quiet Riot. Yeah! They now play blues :) hee hee. Pretty tight band too so definitely worth seeing. They have a regular gig at the Sugar Mill Saloon if you want to go and check them out. Beware of the stale popcorn though. Even though, it is IMPOSSIBLE to not eat it because there is a basket at every table and its just there. Every bite you think, "gross, this is stale" and then you just keep going back for more. It's powerful stuff - stale popcorn :)
Of course, more fun time at the Good Nite even though there was a cockroach the size of my ring finger hanging out. They killed it so its all good. At least it's not a restaurant! Tall Guy and I were talking about it and I said, "yeah it was the size of my finger" and he goes, "no it wasn't" then I held out my ring finger and I was all "Yeah, the size of my finger. hello!!!" My hands are small. I'm a small girl so really, it was not a bad description. Then we headed over and watched Wall-E with MisterJT & the Disney crew.
So, yes, I give myself permission to be lazy, watch the Dodgers/Giants game and eat White Castle Burgers before whatever happens later. :) Cheers!
