I went home to San Diego for Thanksgiving. It was so great. We actually took a family picture.
That's most of us. My other brother and his family are missing and my mom, who was up in Seattle visiting them and of course, my dad.
The update for this year is that there are 3 new babies - Tyler, Elena and Matthew.
Our 3 families: The Martinos, The Montellanos, and The Armintias ; have been having Thanksgiving Day lunch/dinner for the past 20 years. I think that makes it an official tradition. Normally, these things seem to end after awhile - people move, grow apart - but for 20 years, we have continued getting together for the holidays. It does not matter that I only see them every couple of months (if that) we always make time to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. I asked my sister if she thought the kids would keep this up and she said, "I'll force them." It is pretty amazing to see how big our families have become - now we have the Dalarayas, the Sablads, and opps, I forget what Ryan's last name is. Sorry, Ryan! But as you can see, we just keep extending the family.
Ryan was the one who took this picture as well. It was pretty funny, he set it up the camera on the second floor and had to run down a flight of stairs to make it in the picture. It's crazy how fast you will move when you only have 10 seconds to get into position. He's the one of the right - looking quite cool and collected. It probably did not help that the guys were yelling out, "oh, it already took the picture!" or "I don't think you set it right!" or "you only have 2 seconds left!" while we all laughed.
Highlights from the day :
1) walking in on my family - holding hands in the kitchen/tv room at Van & Marc's singing "We are the World" (hilarious!)
2) listening to Mike sing a Madonna medley on the karaoke mic
3) making Elena laugh (she's still got that baby laugh - you know what I'm talking about it right?)
4) my annual batch of pecan tarts from Joy (they are the BEST! and she makes them for me! whoo-hoooo!)
5) Cyndy's chef skills at work - Baked brie this year - yummmm!
6) Attempting to read Rick Riordan's Sea of Monsters to Noah and Hannah while answering questions after every sentence - "what's a Cyclopes?"; "What's the Underworld?" ; "why are they monsters?" ; "what's a half-blood?" ; "what kind of sword?" (there's no pictures in this book so that made it a challenge)
7) Buying most of the kids christmas presents in one place - that's always a great feat
8) spending time with the family (but you knew that already!)
I decided to sew my own costume. Inspired by the lovely Miss Headphone record so I bought material and got to sewing. It's been a super hectic week at work with grades and comments due as well as grading last minute assignments so I didn't have time to sew it during the week. I had this elaborate idea of a crazy 2 headed dragon and my second dragon head would be attached to a stick so I could use to bop kids on the head for being noisy or had detentions to them. The thought seriously cracked me up.
I ended up only having Saturday to get it all together so after going for a walk and getting breakfast. I only had maybe 8 hours to get it together. I also got my haircut that day so that would have been my visit to the "tresseme hair salon," the only person missing was Tim Gunn. Oh it would have been fabulous if he came in while I was putting sparkles on the costume and said, "um, beads...well, make it work."
