You have to read: "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan
As we all should know by now...I LOVE HEART MICHAEL POLLAN. I said before that I would stalk him on the Berkeley Campus...but I'm not that crazy. He's amazing.
I have not finished reading this book but I need to blog this quote:
"If my explorations of the food chain have taught me anything, it's that it is a food chain, and all the links in it are in fact linked: the health of the soil to the health of the plants and animals we eat to the health of the food culture in which we eat them to the health of the eater, in body as well as mind."
Before reading this book, I have been thinking about the foods I grew up with and how to some extent I have been losing my food culture. I miss my dad and mom's cooking. We used to eat together and food was always cooked. We rarely ate out. My brother, Dennis, cooks traditional Filipino food. My sister not so much. My other brother is very Western in what he eats. I, myself, am very Western in what I eat as well. However, there are moment where I crave certain things, like adobo or sinigang, and I have to go and seek these things out. There is something that is being lost in the this American society and Michael Pollan is pretty much expressing it in this book.
I am sure I will have more to say once I am finished but...this is it for now. Seriously, pick this up. It's amazing!
